I guess a good place to start would be Splintershard's more primitive version of this magic system.
In Splintershard, magic is driven primarily by intent and willpower, with some amount of vague "mana" being thrown around as an expendable source of energy that replenishes itself with time.
There isn't all too much beyond these rudimentary guidelines, aside from the usual blerbs about practice leading to improvement
Did you know that we only use 10% of our brains??? Imagine our potential abilities if we could use 100% of our brains!!!
Well, 100% brain activity is a seizure. Everyone would be incapacitated, but that's the price you pay for marvelous mental powers.

Picture this, if you will, for a moment. Imagine a young man, an author. Well, a writer who has just recently become an author, having successfully published his first book. He's just been invited to a big convention, where to his excitement, he will be on a panel alongside some of fantasy's greats in writing (if I'm being sparse on details here, forgive me as I don't remember all of them).
Mana:
Mana are Life-Energy.
It also known as Chi,Ki,Ether and/or Prana, they are the same thing with different name depending on the culture and/or language.
Mana are the primary fuel for magic, being something all living things inherently possessed.
Species-Base Magic:
A creature innate magic come from their Genetic-Code, the building-block of life.
